On our last full day in San Diego we went to La Jolla ("la HOY-uh") Beach. It's a lovely beach in a lot of ways: rocky cliffs populated with pelicans, tide pools, warm sand and crashing Pacific surf. The sky was clear and it warmed up enough to wear shorts, which is a HUGE deal to this Florida girl who is getting kind of tired of the winter clothing. I strolled over to the Title Nine store and used my Christmas gift certificates on a great pair of hiking capris and the best skirt ever. I actually wore it out of the store.
Ahem.
We had leftover pizza from the night before and we were just commenting on how the sea gulls here are not nearly as obnoxious as they are in Florida when one swooped in and stole Emily's pizza. Awhile later I watched another dive in for a huge piece of crust which he swallowed whole, presumably to avoid having to fight off the other gulls while he nibbled it. He must have instantly regretted that decision because he drew his neck in like a frightened turtle and started walking, then running toward the water where he gulped until he could fly away. I hope he got a bad case of indigestion.

But the best thing about La Jolla Beach by far is the seals! Dozens of harbor seals, many with pups, lounging all over the place. They bask on the sand and haul out on the rocks. There is a viewing jetty and when the tide rolls out you can walk out onto the rocks to get even closer. I'm still kicking myself for forgetting my long lens. But still, we were so close to them it hardly mattered.
The uploader is giving me trouble tonight, but if you want to see more seal images click here. If it doesn't take you straight in to the gallery,
