Now, how do I turn that into a home school project?
We spent the last two nights in the Tom Sawyer RV Park in West Memphis, Arkansas. Yes, it's right across the Mississippi from Memphis, Tennessee. So we had the treat of watching the river traffic (large barges, small barges, dead trees, pelicans, refrigerators, etc.) all floating along toward the Gulf of Mexico. Then for other entertainment we headed into the city for sightseeing and the National Civil Rights Museum. The museum is currently under renovation so unfortunately we were not able to see the entire thing. Instead, most of what we did see was focused on the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. You can see the hotel room where Dr. King was staying and walk the balcony. There is a lot of the original evidence from the trial of his assassin, James Earl Ray. There is news footage, copies of Dr. King's speeches and a historical timeline of the American civil rights movement beginning with the first slaves to be brought to America. It was all pretty fascinating and I highly recommend the museum if you ever get to Memphis. We also toured downtown via trolley car and had dinner with some Florida friends who recently moved back to this area. I can tell you there is some excellent barbecue (with sweet tea, of course) at Corky's. The place was totally packed. I wish I had gotten a picture with our server. She was everything you'd expect: friendly, fun, tell-you-the-truth ("Ya know if you get the half rack you can have it half wet-half dry jus' sayin' then you'll have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.") Seriously, one of my favorite aspects of traveling is the cool people you meet. We left Memphis for Hot Springs National Park today. The bedroom slider came all the way out (woot!) and we have a lovely campsite on the river. Kevin grilled chicken for dinner and a kitty showed up. His campfire cooking has that effect on cute animals. Only last time, at Olympic National Park, it was a spotted skunk and I think he (Kevin, not the skunk) made beef stew. It was actually cute. The skunk, I mean. But I digress. I should also report we tried the bacon S'mores tonight and they were good. But Joel thinks they will be improved by the use of fresh bacon instead of leftovers.

Skunks....I have a really interesting skunk story Kevin - but not for internet consumption...a really bad night in Bryce Canyon NP many moons ago, I staggered out of my tent for an early AM bathroom break. It gets interesting from there on....

Hey Darryl: I can't wait to hear your story from Bryce. We hope to spend a night in the backcountry there on a full moon on this trip so you might be able to keep us out of smelly trouble!

OK...Imagine if you will....after doing my bathroom business, I get back to the tent. A skunk is rooting through our supposedly extinguished fire coals. Well - Pepe Le Pew finds one that still has a hot ember that burns his little nose. He goes berzerk!! I immediately DIVE face first into our tent. My camping buddy comes up swinging - out of a dead sleep - and thinks he is being robbed. It took a few seconds to get him calmed down. The skunk eventually ran off with his pride hurt, but not before leaving some wonderful odor for us around the campfire, luckily not on the tent. Needless to say we went to the camp store for breakfast that morning.....

Hilarious story, Darryl. Thanks for sharing it! We might have fun stories of Javelina's trying to steal our dinner at Big Bend if what we just heard from recent campers is true. Apparently, they are watching the Rio Grande campsites and can intrude upon you if they like the smell of what you are cooking. Stay tuned....

Hi Jenni (and Family) -- So fun to find your blog via Kelli's. We are living "la vida loca" in Espana this year. It has been quite an adventure for us. It is fun to hear about your cross country adventure. -- Angie (from the "Creative Weekend" in California)

Off topic, but I keep meaning to ask-- maybe some time you can post a neat RV recipe-- something that says, "camping" or "small kitchen but really, really tasty and fun". Comments are closed.
