I walked a wide circle of a few blocks along the Ohio River, through downtown, up main street, and back through a residential area. The town had that beguiling mixture of worn down and well cared for. I tried to avoid the predictable gritty alley and peeling paint images. After so many months of shooting landscapes where it was important to think through an image and my goal before shooting, this was all about capturing on the fly and seeing what I could do if I fired fast without a lot of thought. I don't know if it helped to improve my photography skills much, but it did help me experience the essence of an urban place better, which is something decidedly outside my comfort zone.
On Tuesday we took a breather day so the kids could enjoy their final day with the Boyinks. I had to make a quick run for a few staples and took a little extra time to walk around the town of Aurora. While doing so I gave myself a personal photo challenge: to try to capture the feel of the town (from what little I can see in under an hour) with my only my iPhone. I have noticed that in an urban environment my Canon is large enough to draw attention and, more often than I like, suspicious stares. I guess in this post-9/11 world people get concerned when they see someone with a big piece of glass. Especially petite 40-something-ish women in hoodies and denim capris.

Jenni - just made this Ohio River home town girl home sick....love the fall leaves! Thanks for the glimpse of back home. I'm kind of over my jeans and sweaters but coffee is nice, and it HAS been cool to have such an extended fall color season. There are still a lot of leaves on the trees here in DC. Definitely shoot with your phone on a regular basis. I feel like it makes me practice composition more and not rely so heavily on a wide aperture. 11/14/2013 10:54:57 am
You did a good job. Makes me want to visit or live there. I especially liked the stop sign and the golden leaves with the black post was my favorite!!!! Comments are closed.
