We are camped in Surrey, which is so close to the border of Washington that I am not kidding when I say the average fourth-round MLB draft pick could probably hit the border fence from the roof of the Bob T. There is not a lot to see here but it’s not far from Vancouver, which is what we toured yesterday. Just driving from Surrey into the city made me realize what a great multicultural educational opportunity this is. It’s one thing to go into a completely foreign country, but quite another to go somewhere that feels the same yet has significant differences. Right at customs Joel noticed signs in French and asked why they were there. We told him many Canadians speak French. There was a moment of concern as our French is mainly limited to “creme brûlée” and “reservoir,” but as Kevin pointed out most Canadians are bilateral. Whew!
At Stanley Park there is plenty to do, including the aquarium. They are currently having a big jellyfish festival and a banner out front proclaimed, “Their beauty kind of makes up for the fact that they poop through their mouths.” Awesome! A marine biology lesson without paying the price of admission or braving the crowds!
